DJ AmpLive - Rainydayz Remixes

In 2007 Radiohead did something revolutionary.  They self-released their album, In Rainbows, digitally for the price of 'you name it'.  That meant you could pay $10 for it, $1000, or nothing at all.  Seems like profit suicide right?  Well, I guess most people still paid the normal price, and many people bought the physical copies too.  Only a third of people downloaded the album for free; I was one of them, but hey, I don't have money to blow, give me a break.

Anyways, DJ AmpLive from the group Zion I started putting together a set of remixes using In Rainbows and vocals from various MC's.  Radiohead's label got wind of this outrageous offense and tried to put a stop to it.  Good thing they went after AmpLive because getting albums for free and then remixing them never happens...  The two sides worked it out, though, and the final product, Rainydayz Remixes, was made available as a free release.

This track features Del The Funky Homosapien, Ice Cube's cousin and all around awesomehead, and is one of my favorites off the project.  Get the whole thing for $FREE.99 here.

On a barely related note, I first found out about this set on imeem when that used to be around.  Remember imeem?  I miss it.  I'm tempted to make a MySpace just to get my playlists back but doing that just sounds awful.

Martin Solveig - Hello (ft. Dragonette)

French producer Martin Solveig hooked up with the group Dragonette from Canada for this fun little ditty.  It's currently topping the Most Popular list over at the Hype Machine.  It's also the reigning number one single in the Netherlands for the new year, so get it now and tell everyone how cool you are once it gets big in the States.

Thanks to Broke Mogul for the download.

Tupac - Do For Love (Vodka & Milk Remix)

This remix group bills themselves as "like mixing vodka and milk".  I'd say that's accurate because all of their tracks are straight nasty.  I had a really hard time picking just one song to feature, but the beat they made up for this Pac song is so infectious.

Listen

You want more already don't you?  To the cloud.  They do it for your love, so show it back.

Don't miss out on the track synced over the original music video featuring the most thug cartoon ever.

Duck Sauce - Barbra Streisand

I've got two challenges for you:  watch this video and
  1. try to name all the celebs that appear in it
  2. try not to have the song stuck in your head immediately after it ends
I'll be honest with you, if you have a soul you're probably gonna fail on both counts, but that's okay.
Duck Sauce is a collaboration effort between Armand Van Helden and A-Trak.  I know more about A-Trak so let's focus on him: he is the brother of one of the guys in the band Chromeo, and he also used to DJ for Kanye West (hint: they're both in the video).  These guys are obviously a big deal in the music biz just based on the cameos alone.  Look out for all sorts of hip-hop and electro icons... and filthy hipsters too.  Here's the download; it's not quite as fun as the video because so much wild stuff is going on, but it'll get you your fix for that singing...

Or this can meet that need
Hooold up.  Yes, Duck Sauce brilliantly sampled this 1979 single 'Gotta Go Home' by the Jamaican-German group, Boney M.  Don't worry, the producer of this song got a production credit on 'Barbra Streisand'.

And the rabbit hole goes deeper
'Gotta Go Home' was already a recycled melody from another German group, Nighttrain, released all the way back in 1973!

Damn Duck Sauce, you crazy.

Skylab - Seashell

"I put a seashell to my ear, and it all comes back."

The sneaking guitar line in this tune and the simple little sound effects make for musical sunshine.  Probably the seashell references and beach pictures add to that too...

I really have no use for a white Christmas if that means snow and not sand beaches.  I'll go to Miami OR Ibiza any day.

I'm gonna pass out to this now, and pretend I'm somewhere warm.
Merry Christmas

jj - kills (Mixtape)

jj released a free mixtape today titled 'kills'.  jj is a Swedish duo that uses samples from different hip-hop songs.  I usually enjoy covers of rap music by rock or pop groups, but jj puts out tracks that are way beyond normal covers.  They take these samples and completely make them their own - it's tripped out pop music with all the raw and badass elements of rap music.  It works.

Get it here.

Passion Pit - Little Secrets (Jaques Remix)

I don't know much about this Jaques guy but all his remixes are awesome.  I'm really feeling the rhymes around two and a half minutes in too, but I don't know where they're from.  Maybe a Jaques original rap?

Listen and Download.
